Petra Solano - Biography

Petra Andel is a main character on CW dramedy Jane the virgin. She is portrayed by Yael Grobglas who was nominated for TV Line Performer of the Week in 2016 for her performance in "Chapter Thirty-Six".
Initially introduced as an antagonist in the first season, the character of Petra redeems herself over the course of the series after facing a number of traumatic events, giving birth to her twin daughters, making amends with her ex-husband Rafael, and developing a close friendship and sisterly bond with main character Jane Villanueva. She's often described as "cunning" and "manipulative", often displaying a colder exterior. Around the middle of the first season, Grobglas discovered a niche for physical comedy, which the writers embraced.

Midway through the fourth season, Petra finds herself attracted to her lawyer Jane Ramos (Rosario Dawson), and the two embark in an on-again, off-again relationship throughout the remainder of the show. By naming the character "Jane", the writers give a nod to the fans previously rooting for Petra to end up with the series' lead.
Grobglas speaks highly of Petra's relationship with Jane Ramos, describing as it being what she wanted for Petra the entire time, "For her to fall in love, not because she needed someone to complete her, but because she was complete already, and then could have another person added on, to share a life with. And, she's still showing with JR all of these soft sides that we hadn't seen before." In "Chapter Eighty-Two", Petra states that she is bisexual.
