Robert Burton (V) - Biography
Robert Burton served in the first and second Nile campaigns (Gordon Relief Expedition 1884-85), and had been wounded at Ginnis, Sudan in 1885. He also served in the Boer War (1889 - 1902). He re-enlisted with the Lancashire Fusiliers on the 18th August 1914 and went to France where he was wounded at Ypres on the 2nd May 1915. After recovering from his wounds he joined a draft heading for the Gallipoli Peninsula. In a letter home he described how he had escaped drowning when the Royal Edward was torpedoed on the 13 August 1915. The letter is dated the 17 August 1915, the very same day that Robert lost his right leg in a battle at Suvla Bay.Robert's son John Henry Burton, 11014, 15th Lancashire Fusiliers, was killed at Thiepval on the 1st July 1916.Robert also had four other sons who served during WW2:Robert E Burton, 11th Manchester Home Defence (also served in WW1, Pte R.E.
