Fern Renner was born on August 26, 1903. She was the wife of Lawrence Welk.
They were married for 61 years, until Lawrence's death in 1992. They had three children. One of their sons, Lawrence Welk Jr., married fellow Lawrence Welk Show performer Tanya Falan; they later divorced. They had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Fern's long and productive life spanned the entire 20th Century and she was called upon to meet unimaginable and untested challenges. She was born on August 26, 1903, the 13th of 14 children born to Elizabeth and Mathias Renner, an immigrant family in St. Anthony, North Dakota. Eight of her siblings died while Fern was still a child, and her beloved father died when she was just three years old.
