Barbara Windsor - Biography
Barbara Ann Deeks, MBE (born 6 August 1937), known professionally as Barbara Windsor, is an English actress, known for her appearances in the Carry On films and for playing Peggy Mitchell in the BBC One soap opera EastEnders. She joined the cast of EastEnders in 1994 and won the 1999 British Soap Award for Best Actress. She left the show in 2010, before returning for three episodes between 2013 and 2015.
Windsor was born in Shoreditch, London, in 1937 (her birth was registered in Stepney), the only child of John Deeks, a costermonger, and his wife, Rose (née Ellis), a dressmaker. Windsor is of English and Irish ancestry. She passed her 11-plus exams gaining a place at Our Lady's Convent in Stamford Hill. Her mother paid for her to have elocution lessons, and she trained at the Aida Foster School in Golders Green, making her stage debut at 13 and her West End debut in 1952 in the chorus of the musical Love From Judy. She took the stage name Windsor in 1953, inspired by the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Windsor has married three times, but has no children. Ronnie Knight, (married 2 March 1964, divorced January 1985). Stephen Hollings, chef/restaurateur (married 12 April 1986 in Jamaica, divorced 1995). Scott Mitchell, former actor and recruitment consultant (married 8 April 2000).
On 10 May 2018, it was announced by her husband Scott Mitchell, that Windsor had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in April 2014. In January 2019, Mitchell, alongwith some of Windsor's co-stars from EastEnders announced that they would be running the London Marathon in aid of a Dementia campaign. Mitchell also revealed that her health and mental state has been deteriorating as she could no longer recognize Mitchell.
