George Blanda - Biography

George Frederick Blanda ("The Grand Old Man" or "The Fossil") (September 17, 1927 – September 27, 2010) was an American football quarterback and placekicker. Blanda has the distinction of having played 26 seasons of professional football, the most in the sport's history, and had scored more points than anyone in history at the time of his retirement. Blanda retired from pro football in 1976 at the age of 48. He was one of only two players to play in four different decades (John Carney 1988-2010, is the other), and he holds the record for most extra points kicked. He was married to Betty Harris from December 17, 1949 until his death on September 27, 2010. He has two children. Blanda was the son of a Slovak-born Pittsburgh-area coal miner.
