Maria had shone at her Catholic comprehensive school in her hometown of Stoney Stanton in Leicestershire. She gained seven GCSEs and three A-levels, and later graduated from Lancaster University with a Music degree.
After university she moved to London and was employed by a PR agency, but she later returned to Stoney Stanton to work in furniture sales. She wasn't planning on staying for long, but then she fell in love with Lee Wilson, a worker in a printing factory who is three years her junior.
