Leona Edwards McCauley was born on 2 April 1887. She was a mix of African, white and Native American. Leona worked an a poorly paid elementary school teacher.
During the war her mother worked in Detroit, Michigan, and Rosa saw that African Americans in the North had more freedom than did African Americans in the South. On 12 April 1912, she married to James McCauley. James was a carpenter and a builder.
