Matthew Cooke - Biography
In 1999 I walked into The Lounge Cinema in Leeds and told them that I wanted to be their projectionist. Unfortunately they were only looking to fill the position of Usher/dogsbody, but they liked my ambition and so hired me with the promise that I would get to operate the projector further down the line - which I did. My first solo projection was the film 'Stuart Little' and a mistake while lacing the film resulted in a cinema full of crying, terrified children and angry parents. And so my film education had begun. A few years later, after completing a degree in cultural studies, having shot a plethora of corporate videos and having completed my first short film (no, you can't see it), I enrolled at the London Film School to study a Masters, specialising in Cinematography. After working on and making tons of films I graduated in 2005. Since then I've been working as a Cinematographer and pursuing my ambition to shoot great feature films (especially "period thrillers") and with any luck you will have seen some of my commercial work here on this website, or on tv. Over time I have also gained experience in some specialist areas, such as motion-control & table-top work, along with a thorough knowledge of both celluloid and digital image capture formats and workflows. In addition to live-action Cinematography, I have a great interest in CG and use my filmmaking knowledge to feed into my CG imagery and vice versa. As a result I have gained a useful technical understanding of digital production to postproduction pipelines, and an understanding of CG/live action integration, which is becoming more essential as technology and film making techneques evolve. I love stories - films oozing with atmosphere and heart, believable, interesting characters and locations with a real sense of time and place. I don't like unnecessary complication and always strive to find the best and most practical method of achieving the desired moving images.
