David Michaels - Biography
Michaels earned his stripes as a personal assistant to Samuel Goldwyn, Jr., supervising the productions of various iconic cult films such as "Sid & Nancy". Seeking more creative freedom, Michaels went on to executive produce the controversial independent film "Hearts & Minds" about the white South African Secret Police during that country's transition to a Mandela-led democracy. This inspired the production of several more independent films from Michaels as well as the production of three Emmy Award-winning television series for PBS and the Discovery Network.Michaels is also the proprietor and creative force behind such prestigious motion-picture projects as "The Brothers Marx" with Danny DeVito, Scott Alexander, and Larry Karaszewski set at Universal Pictures; "Taxi Dog" with Ted Field and Robin Williams set at Warner Brothers; "Fenwick's Suit" with John August set at Fox 2000; "The Watsons" with Whoopi Goldberg set at Sony/CBS; "The Giver" with Jeff Bridges set at Walden Media; "Dry Fire" with Penny Marshall set at HBO; and "Sleepless Beauty" with Larry Wilson also set at Warner Brothers. In 2008, Michaels produced an independent film with David Lynch which served as the sophomore directing effort of Jennifer Lynch. Mark Cuban's Magnolia Pictures distributed the film domestically. It starred Bill Pullman and Julia Ormond and was in the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival in 2008. A very positive experience for all, Michaels and Lynch have since partnered with Eric Wilkinson to produce their next film "A Fall From Grace", angling for a 2013 production start date.As a filmmaker, Michaels has written the major motion-picture "M" which he will also helm as its director. It will star Juno Temple, Anjelica Huston, Jason Lee, Giovanni Ribisi, Eddie Izzard, and Alanis Morissette. Butch Vig of the band Garbage will score the movie. Michaels has also written and directed "Chinatown", an intriguing slice of period film-noir which premiered to much acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010.Michaels has also written and will direct the irreverent comedy "Flybait", a cross-pollination of "The Big Lebowski" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". He is also developing a project based on the life of Joyce Poole, the former head of the Kenya Wildlife Service and her continued efforts with elephant conservation. Other projects on his development slate include filmmaker Nacho Arena's "Destino" with famed cinematographer Xavi Gimenez ("The Machinist", "Transsiberian") as its director of photography, and a biopic about the infamous Guardian Angels in New York City with director John Avildsen ("Rocky").Michaels is married to uber-model Margaret Peppey and they reside in both New York City and Los Angeles.
