Ernestine Gilbreth Carey - Biography

Author. Born Ernestine Gilbreth in New York City, the third daughter born to Frank and Lillian Gilbreth prominent management consultants and time-study experts. She grew up in Montclair, New Jersey with eleven brothers and sisters and was graduated from Smith College. In 1930, she began a career as a department store buyer and manager and married Charles E. Carey with whom she had two children. In 1949, she and her brother, Frank, collaborated in writing the biographical book, ‘Cheaper by the Dozen' which quickly achieved bestseller status. It was made into a film in 1950 which starred Myrna Loy and Clifton Webb as her parents while she was portrayed by Barbara Bates. That same year, she and her brother received the French International Humor Award for ‘Cheaper by the Dozen.' A sequel, ‘Belles on their Toes' followed in 1952. She began a new career as a writer and lecturer, other books included ‘Jumping Jupiter,' ‘Rings Around Us,' and ‘Giddy Moment.' She died in hospital at Fresno, California at age 98, the last surviving of the six Gilbreth sisters.
