Helena Kallianiotes - Biography
Helena Kallianiotes was born in Greece. At age 10, she came to America and lived in Boston, Mass. At age 16, she started belly dancing in Boston night clubs. In 1958, she left Boston and worked as a belly dancer across the U.S. Settled in California. Belly danced at The Greek Village on Hollywood Blvd. Also belly danced in Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Elco, Nevada. Married 2 times. Taught belly dancing and folk dancing at The Intersection. Owned a private skating rink called SKATE AWAY. Owned the private supper club Helena's. Began working with young artists, writers, and directors. In 2013, Executive Produced the short film The Pimp and the Rose.
During the late 1960s, Helena Kallianiotes was the resident belly dancer at The Intersection, a Greek restaurant in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. This engagement led to her first film appearance as an uncredited belly dancer in the 1968 film Head, directed by Bob Rafelson and starring The Monkees. Kallianiotes was later cast in another Rafelson film Five Easy Pieces, starring Jack Nicholson and Karen Black, in which she played Palm Apodaca, a neurotic, foul-mouthed "butch" hitch-hiker, traveling with her companion played by Toni Basil.
In 1972, Kallianiotes appeared in her most celebrated role as the ultra-aggressive roller derby skater Jackie Burdette in The Kansas City Bomber for which she received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for the 1973 Golden Globe Awards. Other film roles include Mata Hari (not THE Mata Hari) in Shanks (1974), Elaine Reavis in The Drowning Pool (1975), Anita in Stay Hungry (1976), and the Visionary Woman in The Passover Plot (1976).
