Peter Handke (German: [ˈhantkə]) is an Austrian novelist, playwright and translator. He is known for Die linkshändige Frau (1978), Wings of Desire (1987) and Wrong Move (1975). He has been married to Sophie Semin since 1995. They have one child. He was previously married to Libgart Schwarz.
In 2006, Peter Handke was nominated for the Heinrich Heine Prize, but the prize money of €50,000 had to be approved by the city council of Düsseldorf. Members of the council's major parties stated they would vote against awarding the prize to Handke, resulting in the prize being withdrawn.
