Mark Allen - Biography
Mark Allen was born in the small farming community of Jacksonville, Texas 27 December 1961. Growing up in a lower middle-class family, Mark worked part time while going to school. Upon graduation, Mark joined the Navy. He spent 21 years on active duty, in the U.S. and abroad, both during times of peace and in war.He served as a Navy Hospital Corpsman, and achieved the coveted Fleet Marine Force (FMF) Warfare Specialist. He eventually requested and was accepted to Independent Duty Corpsman school in 1992. Less than one percent of all Navy Corpsmen attend this school, and only about 50% graduate and return to the fleet to serve as IDC's. Mark graduated seventh in his class of 24. Over 48 Corpsmen started in his class 54 weeks prior. After four deployments to the Middle East and North Africa, and multiple deployments to various Central American countries during the mid-90's, Mark knew his time was coming to an end.Mark retired in 2001.All his life, Mark wanted to be a writer, and he loved the movies. So after a disastrous first novel flopped in 2000, a career in screenwriting seemed to fit the bill better. He spent years learning the craft and writing screenplays that never sold. He loved (and still loves) smart, well done horror material, so he wrote a script and formed a production company, Forsaken Films. His first production, Delirium (2007) was shot in nine days on a budget of $9000. It achieved an international distribution deal. When the crash of 2007 happened, Mark's company folded. He was in preproduction on a film, and the investors pulled out. Mark spent years trying to recover from the Great Recession, and finally got another production off the ground with a close friend, Producer/Director and fellow military veteran, Kevin DiBacco. The film, Early Grave, was released in 2013, and had theatrical premieres on each coast with limited theatrical runs.In 2014, Mark was diagnosed with Stage 4 throat cancer. All Screenwriting and filmmaking activities went on indefinite hold. Mark's first priority was to fight his cancer and win. He has a wife he adores, children that he loves, and grandchildren he worships. At 53 years old, he was simply too young, too mean, and too ugly to die.So he fought it. And he emerged victorious.Still recovering and under several doctors' care at the Navy Hospital San Diego, Mark is writing again. He does not know if he will ever have the energy or the stamina to produce or direct again, as 14-16 hour days, five or six days a week, for weeks and months at a time, are simply not in the cards. But writing is his first love, and his enthusiasm four screenplays and feature films has not abated. While no one can predict what the future holds, one thing is for sure. Award winning, Produced screenwriter Mark Allen, still has a hand in the Game.
