Sean Schemmel - Biography

Sean Christian Schemmel (born November 21, 1968) is an American voice actor, ADR director, and screenwriter who has worked for NYAV Post, 4Kids Entertainment, Funimation, DuArt Film and Video. He has provided voices for a number of English versions of Japanese anime, television series, and video games. He is best known for voicing the adult version of Goku, the lead character in the popular Dragon Ball metaseries, in the Funimation dub for Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon GT and nearly all Dragon Ball related video games and animated movies.
Sean was born on his mother's 20th birthday. He has an older brother. His biological father left his mother when she was 7 months pregnant with him. They grew in Iowa till he was 12 and then they moved to Odessa, Texas. His surname derives from his adoptive father who is a minister. His maternal grandfather was a John Deere factory worker. In 1985 he moved to Fort Worth, Texas.

Schemmel first began voicing Goku for Funimation in 1999, replacing Peter Kelamis (who had in-turn replaced Ian Corlett) from the previous Ocean Studios cast. He has since been the most consistent English voice actor for the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball franchise; having voiced the adult and older teen variations of Goku in every anime series produced so far (Dragon Ball, Z, GT, Kai and currently Super) and nearly all Dragon Ball animated movies and video games, as well as the supporting character King Kai. In addition to his voice acting career, Schemmel was also an ADR Director and Script writer for NYAV Post, where he had directed and adapted for English dubs of several Japanese anime series. In the field of narration, he has won two awards for his audiobook recordings.
