She is the title character in Mies Julie now playing at Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Lansburgh Theatre. In her native South Africa she is quite the celebrity working in TV, film and on stage. She has been seen on more than 400 episodes of the kids’ show Bundu Buddies and played the character of Meisie die Meerkat. She has worked as a stage manager, in children’s theatre and in industrials and corporates across South Africa. Theatre highlights include Raiders and Die Trane van Petrus Pansegrou. She also has her own environmental play called The Adventures of Sam Swallow. When you see Hilda in Mies Julie, you can describe her performance as one of intense incredibleness. Please make a point to see Mies Julie with Hilda Cronje and an extraordinary company of performers. It’s one you will kick yourself for missing. Here’s hoping Hilda gets another chance to perform back in the states so we can continue to be amazed by her talent.Growing up in South Africa, what got you interested in performing? My grandfather always used to say ‘He who is an actor is an actor, he who is not an actor is not an actor.’I grew up surrounded with stories and storytellers. I cannot remember wanting to be anything else. I think my first production was when I was four- I staged, produced and obviously starred in the nativity play. You have done a lot of TV work in South Africa besides working in various parts of the theatrical field. Do you prefer theatre over TV or are there things about them that each make them good places to work? The magic that happens when you are on stage, the immediate exchange between the audience and the actor is addictive. However the excitement to bring a character to life whether at “curtain up” or “and action” gets me every time. As an actor, you’re just grateful to be working. It has been my experience that this play affects every person who watches it in a personal way. This piece explores the dark truths of our society’s our, past and where we have arrived as individuals. The piece, as uniquely South-African, also addresses universal themes. Some people leave shattered others angry and some deeply moved by what they’ve just experienced. I could blanket it and say South-Africans are devastated as our collective truths are brutally laid bare but the truth is everyone has a different response. Perhaps the biggest difference is that the American audiences can applaud much quicker after the performance. In South Africa there is almost always a stunned silence as the lights fade to black out.
