Howard Ellsworth Rollins, Jr. (October 17, 1950 – December 8, 1996) was an American stage, film and television actor. He was perhaps best known for his portrayal of Coalhouse Walker, Jr. in the 1981 film Ragtime, for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and two Golden Globe Awards. Rollins also had a successful career on television as Virgil Tibbs on the NBC/CBS television series In the Heat of the Night.
