Marva Trotter - Biography
Marva Trotter (Louis) (Spaulding) was born in Oklahoma in 1915, and raised in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from high school in 1933, she worked as a stenographer. In the 1930s and 1940s, she was best known for being the wife of the famous boxer Joe Louis, whom she married in 1934.
But Marva also wanted a career as an entertainer: always a fashionable dresser, she became a model, and made a number of appearances at fashion shows. She was frequently written about in the black newspapers of her day, especially the Chicago Defender, where she was friendly with society columnist and reporter Marian Foster Downer (who often accompanied her to fashion shows and then reported on what occurred). Marva was also a singer, and performed with such big bands as Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
She and Joe Louis got divorced in 1945, remarried, and got divorced again in 1949-- according to the newspapers, her complaint was that he was rarely home and only cared about his boxing career, while his complaint was that she was extravagant and spent too much money on clothing and jewelry. After their marriage ended, Marva raised money for several black charities, and ultimately married a doctor named Albert Spaulding in 1950. She died in Chicago in 2000.
