Mary Carlisle - Biography

She was the standard prototype of the porcelain-pretty collegiate and starry-eyed romantic interest in a host of Depression-era films and although her name may not ring a bell to most, Mary Carlisle enjoyed a fairly solid decade in the cinematic limelight.
Mary Carlisle was brought to Hollywood at age four by her recently widowed mother. While eating lunch with her mother at the Universal Pictures commissary, Mary was spotted by Carl Laemmle Jr. and offered a screen test. She was interested, but decided to finish school before launching her film career. She finally stepped before the cameras in the early Cecil B. DeMille talkie Madame Satan (1930); she free-lanced thereafter, appearing in as many as 18 pictures a year. Mary played leads from 1933 onward, notably in a trio of Bing Crosby pictures: College Humor (1933), Double or Nothing (1937) and Doctor Rhythm (1938). During Mary's first decade in Hollywood, her mother became the second wife of industrialist Henry J. Kaiser.

In 1942, Carlisle married British-born actor James Edward Blakeley (1910–2007), who later became an executive producer at 20th Century-Fox. She retired from films shortly after getting married. The couple had one child during their nearly 65-year marriage. In her later life, she was in charge of the Elizabeth Arden Salon in Beverly Hills, California. Carlisle died on August 1, 2018 at a retirement community for actors in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. She was believed to be 104, but never personally confirmed her age or birth date during her life.
