Olympia Nelson - Biography
Not only is MYM’s Summer School a week of intense music-making, it is one of the most inspiring weeks I have ever experienced after years of participation. In Symphony Orchestra this year conducted by the amazing Alex Pringle, we played Tchaikovsky Symphony 5 (movement 1), Mahler Symphony 1 (movement 3) and Shostakovich Symphony 5 (movement 4). Throughout the week, Alex emphasised the importance of playing with honest emotion, learning how to listen and understand the music profoundly and being highly observant of everything that is happening around you. He also helped us to understand our individual roles in the orchestra. For example, if you’re a principal string player, it is crucial to engage with the quartet (violin 1, 2, viola and cello).Having all this intricate knowledge and detailed understanding meant that we could create music as a community that transcends any mundane playing. Alex spoke about Tchaikovsky’s use of interlocking lines, which helped us to play with fluidity, as we understood all the different voices around our section. After Alex suggested for the Tchaikovsky that we imagine the main theme as a dwarf march, our playing changed. It was transformative for the entire orchestra. Toward the end of the week, he came up with an image of our old grandmother, deaf in one ear, seated at the back of the concert hall. “Play to her!” he would remind us. Each time he told us this, the intensity in our playing would increase. With the Mahler symphony, Alex talked to us about how Mahler skillfully switches between a sad, eerie mood to an unexpected parody reminiscent of a Jewish folk dance. In learning about this impressive and unique counterpoint (switching between different harmonious lines) we were able to imbue this movement with corresponding kinds of emotions. It was amazing to see how by the time of the concert, our style had completely transformed. Our ability to observe, to be vigilant and to adhere to the conductor’s desired style was truly put to the test at the end of the week. The students from the Conductor Development Program each went through excerpts of our pieces with us, challenging us with different tempi and styles. It was really interesting to alternate from style to style, and to see how quickly we could adapt to many vast interpretations of the same piece! Each day at Summer School seemed to pass so quickly. From the fun times with friends, to the engaging tutorials, the workshops, and the infectious humour and happiness that all the MYM staff brought everywhere. Here’s to a week of incredible talent, long-lasting friendships and a big step in our musical education!by Olympia Nelson
