Peter May - Biography

Peter May won the Scottish Young Journalist of the Year Award at the age of 21, and had his first novel published at 26. He then left journalism and became one of Scotland`s most successful and prolific television dramatists. By the age of 30 he had created two major TV series, The Standard and Squadron, for the BBC. He went on to gather more than 1000 TV credits in fifteen years, creating and writing major drama serials for both BBC and ITV in the UK: gaining experience as a scriptwriter, script editor and story editor on STV’s long-running Take The High Road. May was co-creator and producer of the ground-breaking Gaelic serial Machair, set in the Outer Hebrides, and led a 70-strong cast and crew to the Isle of Lewis where they spent six months out of every year, for 4 years shooting single-camera on location. The series was nominated for writing and production awards in national and international arenas.Recently May has returned to writing novels and his China Thrillers series of books are winning critical acclaim. Published first in the UK and commonwealth, they have been published in Germany, Italy and Holland. They are currently being published in the USA and France and have been shortlisted for prizes in both countries. Meticulous research, compelling characters and ingenious plots are the trademarks of this often controversial series. Peter May won praise for his vibrant portrayal of contemporary Chinese life and attention to scientific and medical detail. To research the series, Peter May made annual trips to China. With an extraordinary network of contacts, he gained unprecedented access to the homicide and forensic science sections of Beijing and Shanghai police forces and made a painstaking study of the methodology of Chinese detectives and pathologists. As a mark of their respect for his work, The Chinese Crime Writers` Association made him an honorary member of their Beijing Chapter. He is the only Westerner to receive such an honour. His latest series of books features retired forensic scientist Enzo Macleod and is set in France. The first of these, Extraordinary People, was published in November 2006 in the USA and will be published in the UK in summer 2007.PETER MAY - CREDITS & BIBLIOGRAPHY:Extraordinary People (2006) NovelChinese Whispers (2004) Novel.
