Sarah Selby was born on August 30, 1905 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. She was an actress, known for Beyond the Forest (1949), The Hardy Boys: The Mystery of the Applegate Treasure (1956) and Tower of London (1962).
Her first screen assignment was a voice-over as one of the gossiping elephants in Disney's animated feature Dumbo (1941). She continued to play minor roles as nurses, housekeepers, and town gossips until her retirement in 1977; one of her last roles was Aunt Polly in a 1975 TV-movie adaptation of Huckleberry Finn. On television, Sarah Selby was seen on a semi-regular basis as storekeeper Ma Smalley on Gunsmoke (1955-1975).
She was married to Holger Yngvar Harthern. She died on January 7, 1980 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
