Princess Aurora is the lead heroine of Disney's animated adaptation of the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty.She is the daughter of King Stephan. The movie begins with all of Stephan's kingdom arriving at the palace to celebrate the birth of their new princess. During the celebration, she is also betrothed to prince Philip, the young son of King Hubert who rules a neighbouring kingdom seeking to make peace with King Stephan.Stephan also summons the three good fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather to endow his daughter with their magical blessings. Flora grants the princess the gift of beauty, while Fauna gives her the gift of a beautiful singing voice. But just when Merryweather is about to produce her gift, the evil fairy Maleficent appears. Angry that the royals did not invite her to the celebration, she puts a curse on the young princess - so that on her 16th birthday, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die. Maleficent then disappears before Stephan's guards can seize her.The good fairies are powerless to undo the curse on Aurora, but Merryweather is able to weaken the spell so that if such a thing does happen, she will only fall asleep, not die. And the only thing that will awaken Aurora from the spell is a kiss from her true love.But the three good fairies still fear for the princess' safety. They decide to take her away from the palace where she will be easily targeted by Maleficent. Disguising themselves as old mortal women, they raise the child as a peasant girl, giving her the name Rose, and pretending to be her aunts. They also swear never to use magic, as it would reveal their presence to Maleficent, who still wants to harm the princess.Under the guidance of her "aunts", Aurora (as the peasant girl Rose) grows into a beautiful young woman with a singing voice that charms all the animals of the forest, where they have been living away from the kingdom. Aurora is happy, but very lonely living in the forest. She confides in her animal friends that she has been dreaming about a handsome stranger. The animals attempt to simulate Aurora's fantasy by stealing the clothes of a travelling young man. Aurora laughs at the charade and dances with the animals, but then finds herself dancing with a real young man, who has been enchanted by her beautiful singing voice and has followed the woodland creatures who stole his clothes.Aurora and the young man fall in love and agree to meet later, but when she returns to her cottage, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather reveal to her that she is a princess and that she is already betrothed to a prince and therefore she can never see the young man again.Aurora is heart-broken by the news. But doing as she's told, she wears the gown that the fairies have woven with their magic and travels with them to the royal palace, in preparation to meet her real parents and subjects. The fairies also create a crown for her, but in spite of all the finery, she is still upset about the handsom stranger. The fairies decide to give her a few moments alone, and it is then that Maleficent takes her chance to strike.Casting a spell, Maleficent hypnotises Aurora and lures her into a secret chamber withing the royal palace - it is here that the last remaining spinning wheel has been kept hidden. Aurora touches the needle at Maleficent's command and is instantly put into a deep sleep.The three good fairies arrive too late, and Maleficent mocks them before vanishing back to her Forbidden Mountain to celebrate her victory. The fairies put Aurora into a bed and cast a spell over the whole palace so that all the people will sleep until Aurora wakes up. But as they do so, they learn from a drowsey King Hubert that his son has fallen in love with a peasant girl - the Briar Rose. Realising that Prince Phillip is the handsome stranger and the only one who can undo the spell, they rush back to the cottage to find him, but find that Maleficent has already captured him.The three fairies then head to Maleficent's stronghold upon the Forbidden Mountain. They rescue Phillip and give him a magical sword and shield. With these, he defeats Maleficent's guards and charges back to the Royal Palace on his steed. Maleficent then attacks the Prince, transforming herself into a dragon. Phillip slays the dragon by hurling the magic sword into her heart, therefore killing Maleficent.Phillip then heads into the palace and kisses Aurora. She wakes from her sleep, and the rest of the kingdom awake from their spell. Hubert realises that the princess and peasant girl who Phillip fell in love with are one and the same. The prince and princess dance in front of the whole kingdom to celebrate their union, and they live happily ever after.
