Anthony John "Tony" Soprano, Sr. is a fictional character and the protagonist on the HBO television drama series The Sopranos, on which he is portrayed by James Gandolfini. The character was conceived by The Sopranos' creator and show runner David Chase, who was also largely responsible for the character's story arc throughout the show's six seasons. Bobby Boriello portrayed Tony Soprano as a child in one episode and Danny Petrillo played the character as a teenager in three episodes. The character is loosely based on real life New Jersey mobster Vincent "Vinny Ocean" Palermo who is a former capo and de-facto street boss of the New Jersey DeCavalcante crime family. The DeCavalante Family is widely considered to be the model for the Soprano family, especially because some of the incidents that the DeCavalcantes were involved in have been incorporated in some of the Sopranos scripts. He is often regarded as one of the most popular and examined characters in television history.
