Actress Evanston home after a lengthy illness., 83July 29, 1999|By Rick Kogan, Tribune Staff Writer. 8Many decades ago, the writer Nelson Algren sent a telegram to his friend Studs Terkel, praising one of the cast members of the television show "Studs' Place": "Beverly Younger has more class than Eve, Joan of Arc and the v*rgin Mary put together."An actress noted for her work on radio, stage, television and in films, Beverly Younger Podewell died Saturday in her Evanston home after a lengthy illness. She was 83. Her death comes less than a year after that of her husband of more than 60 years, actor Les Podewell, who died in 1998 at 91. The two had met in 1937 on the stage of the Blackstone Theater when both were appearing in a production of Eugene O'Neill's "The Straw." They married that same year.
