Susan Engel - Biography

Susan Gayle Engel was born in Omaha, Nebraska, to Eileen Marie (Johnston), a cosmetologist, and Jerry Edward Engel, a truck driver for United Parcel Service. Her father is of German descent, and her mother of Irish ancestry. Susan started performing early in life; at the age of four she began training in classical ballet, which she still practices to this day. In 1983, at the age of seven, she was the cheerleader mascot for Bellevue East High School. In 1986, she made her first debut in the Bellevue East High School musical The Music Man. In 1987, Susan was the cheerleader captain for Bellevue Junior Sports Association (B.J.S.A.) Flyers football team. Also that year, she was first runner-up in speech, was awarded the outstanding participant award and placed in the top five in talent, at her first pageant, the Miss American Pre-Teen. During 1989, Susan was the cheerleader captain of the B.J.S.A. Bombers football team. She belonged to a club called S-Troop, which stands for students against drugs. She performed in a play called My Days as a Youngling, at the Bellevue Little Theater. She participated in a modeling and dance presentation for the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation. Susan ended 1989 winning the Miss Christmas Angel Pageant, Miss Christmas Angel Talent. In 1990, Susan was voted Miss Diamond Doll USA and Miss Diamond Doll Model. Some of Susan's achievements through her high school years: student council, drama, marketing, student of the month, office aide, N.A.S.C. leadership training, talent shows, 14 years of training in ballet. Dance camp with Joe Tremaine. She performed in her high school musical Hello Dolly. Susan completed 4 years and lettered in the East Singers and was a member of the Bellevedette Drill Team where she competed in field and parade competitions. Susan graduated from Bellevue East High School in 1994. In 1995, Susan was crowned Miss American Petite Nebraska, and was a judge for Bellevue University Drill Team. In 1998, Susan had her first taste of filming in commercials: Caldor Horse Racing and MTV Music Fashion Show. Susan moved to Los Angeles in 2000, to explore the entertainment industry; working daily on various sets in front and behind camera for six years on such films as: Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events, The Sweetest Thing, The Terminal, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, I Heart Huckabees, Haunted Mansion, Catch Me If You Can, Surviving Gilligan's Island, Mission Impossible III, The Animal, Clock Stoppers, Run Ronny Run, Vanilla Sky, View from the Top, I Am Sam, Girl Fever, Pumpkin, Phone Booth, Orange County, Laurel Canyon, Just Married, Old School, The Country Bear and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. TV shows: 24, Friends, Six Feet Under, Felicity, Once and Again, The Practice, Boston Public, Roswell, Family Law, Strong Medicine, Angel, Handler, State of Grace, District, CSI, Citizen Banes, Reba, Malcolm in the Middle, 7th Heaven and the Andy Dick Show. Commercials: Master Card, Pepsi, WWF, Hallmark, VH1, MTV Promo, Bud Light, Chef Boyardee, Fiat, Merida Soda and Power Astro Industrial. Music Videos: Matchbox Twenty, Eve 6, Wall Flowers, Corrs, Injected and the Living End. Susan created a production company LightSwitch Films in 2008. Her focus is on directing, producing and screen writing. The name was created for Susan Engel's father as his CB handle, while working at United Parcel Service, as a Truck Driver. He passed on in 1996. Susan rekindles his legacy "LightSwitch" with honors.
