Sami Frey - Biography

Sami Frey (born Samuel Frei on 13 October 1937) is a French actor of Polish Jewish descent. Among the films he starred in are En compagnie d'Antonin Artaud (1993), in which he portrays French poet and playwright Antonin Artaud, and Bande à part (1964) by Jean-Luc Godard.
Born in 1937 in Paris, Sami Frey is the son of Mendel Frei and Perla Wolf, Polish immigrant Jews in France; they died while deported to a Nazi camp during the Second World War, he owes his survival to his grandmother Chaya Wolf who protected him during the arrest of his mother.

Sami leaves Paris with his grandfather Chraïm, his uncle and aunt and his cousin, they take refuge in Saint-Avit-les-Guespières (Eure-et-Loir), in the house keeper of the castle in which the Germans have installed, he goes to school in the neighboring village of Saint-Denis-les-Ponts. In 1944, during a medical visit, the school doctor discovers that Sami Frey is Jewish, they are then forced to flee to Rodez.
